On Wednesday September 9th Apple Announced this years new iPhones. The 6S and the 6S Plus.
I’ve alread pre-ordered mine, so expect more on the phones later.
Besides being a lot faster, shipping with the new iOS9 operating system, and loads of subtle improvements, there are some standout improvements you should be aware of.
STAND OUT FEATURES
- -12MP camera
- -4k filming and editing on the phone.
- -3D-Touch – pressure sensitive screen with multiple levels of interaction
- -Live-Photos – Harry-Potter style living photos at full resolution
- -70 percent faster CPU performance, and up to 90 percent faster GPU performance
- -Updated 100% speed increase to Touch-ID
- -Stronger aluminum – makes it one of the only phones that won’t bend easily
The iPhone is already able to replace most people’s camera, and the jump in megapixels and other camera tech make the 6S
Crucial to the 3D-Touch feature is a new component to the operating system design, adding 2 more layers of interaction. This idea scared me when it was rumored because of the added complexity, and how it could ruin the best operating system on the planet. I’ve surprised and Happy to say the incorporation of 3D-Touch (a renamed version of what was Force-Touch on the Mac and Apple Watch) is amazing, and I’m willing to bet that it sees an extremely high adoption rate.
Take this one example: The 3D-Touch interface allows you to reach common action items in apps without ever opening the app. Want to take a selfie? Hard-press on the camera app or Facebook app and choose “take selfie” without needing to open the app first. Each app will have it’s own quick-menu you can choose an action from without need of launching it.
Take this second example: The 3D-Touch Interface will let you preview all kinds of content and even act on it — without having to actually open it. For example, with a light press you can “Peek” at each email in your inbox. Then when you want to open one, press a little deeper to Pop into it. Peeking at your mail will leave it unread, saving you an action step. You can press hard on a link and get a preview of the website it links to before deciding to open it up in a web browser.
There are a host of other improvements, that show that Apple is refining as much as it is innovating. Take Siri for example, which is amped up and much faster, as well as capable of being “always on” in terms of being able to trigger it by saying ‘hey Siri’ all the time, and having to customized to learn and listen for your personal voice. This all done without any data leaving you device (safe and secure)
One of the reasons I’ve always loved “S” releases, is that instead of focusing on making a slimmer phone, Apple focuses on technology, like Siri, Touch-ID, and now 3D-Touch -all S-series releases and all game changers for the iPhone.
I’m quite excited to get my hands on one and to post some 4k footage for you. Lots of phones have had “higher-megapixel” cameras and “4k” footage that have all been worse than iPhone’s former 8mp images (because there is a LOT more than megapixels to making an image great). They sell those phones to those who read spec sheets instead of comparing actual results and reviews. So I’m excited to see how Apple maintains it’s camera quality lead and to have some harry-potter photos of my daughter.
The iPhone 6S is also available in a new Rose-gold color option. Not that I’m interested in it, but maybe it’s what you’ve longed for.
