Long Live The Middle Of Nowhere

by Dustan Hlady on Saturday, January 23, 2016

What are the last three songs you’ve listened to? If they aren’t a producer-created artist or band, chances are they come out of  one of the world’s main music scenes. In Canada these centers are Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

Los Angeles

NEW YORK

DETROIT

AND LONDON

are also popular music scenes that bands and artist come up and out of.

Sometimes a city, void of connections to record labels, big promoters or even a large audience is still is able to create a successful music scene made up of high-caliber bands and artists who write, record and perform, often in obscurity.

If being in the Detroit music scene is jumping in a river, being a part of a music scene in culturally isolated centers is digging the Suez canal by hand. For many bands and artists I meet, this upward battle is a frustrating part of doing what they love.

But I love it. I love going to shows. Sometimes I’m lucky and my city has three in one night. Going from show to show, listening to my friends play, watching their music develop is an amazing experience.  And a definite strength of small-scene music is the opportunity to know the artists and subsequently the stories behind the songs (or hear the first fruits of what starts as a rant, an idea, an experience and in time becomes a song).

Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan  has a very special music scene. One of the amazing things about it is its diversity. Bands that would never play with each other in Toronto regularly share the stage. A live show in Moose Jaw might be like your playlist, a bit of everything.

Recently 10 bands/artists who  live in or have roots in Moose Jaw put together an album sampling 20 of their newest songs. It’s called “Long Live The Middle of Nowhere Vol. 1”. It will be available on February 1 in select cases of Paddock Wood 606 India Pale Ale (look for the sticker) across the country and anywhere you listen to and buy online music.
